PRESS RELEASE Mon, 7th Feb, 2011

String™ announces the release of its free Augmented Reality Showcase onto the App Store, features exclusively in News Corp’s The Daily.

LONDON, UK (Feb, 2011) - String Labs, an augmented reality technology company headquartered in London, UK, has released its AR Showcase onto the App Store, featuring a range of content developed by Bully! Entertainment (Baltimore, US)  and Boffswana (Melbourne, Aus) as well as in-house experiments - all powered by String’s super fast mobile augmented reality technology. The app will be free, and will support iPhone 3G, 3GS, 4 and iPod Touch 4G.

In addition to printing the image targets from www.poweredbystring.com that are required to trigger the content,  the String™ AR Showcase app will also work in conjunction with a feature in News Corp’s “The Daily”, where users can not only read about this exciting technology, but experience it directly - by pointing their iPhones at their iPad; the first time this has been done for a digital iPad publication.

“Mobile vision-based AR didn’t really deliver the user experiences that people were hoping for last year,” says Alan Maxwell, Founder & CEO of String Labs, “but with the release of our free Showcase App, we’re giving the public a glimpse into what they can look forward to in 2011, as well as providing a showcase platform for developers who are innovating with the String™ AR software developers kit.”

The String™ AR Showcase app features:

Pharaoh’s Fury AR game demo
by Bully! Entertainment

“Proto” interactive character
by Boffswana

Clayful, digital AR clay
by Mike Renwick

Scrawl, true 3D Augmented Reality drawing
by String

and Sneaker.ID, an interactive, customisable sneaker by String

String™ is already being hailed as best-in-class and has been licensed by blue chip brands, videogame companies and advertising agencies to deliver the next generation of mobile immersive experiences.

PRESS RELEASE 4/11/10

String Labs announces its super fast augmented reality SDK for iPhone developers.

LONDON, UK (Nov, 2010) - For the last 18 months, String Labs, an augmented reality technology company, has been quietly developing its own vision-based AR tech called String™, optimized for mobile devices. String™ is already being recognized as best-in-class and has been licensed by blue chip brands, videogame companies and advertising agencies to deliver the next generation of immersive experiences.

It’s all well and good recognizing and tracking an image then placing content on top of it. But to make that illusion truly convincing, the engine has to be fast enough in order to keep up with the real world movement of the phone’s camera. So the goal for developing String™ was speed, speed and more speed. Then making it as small as possible so developers have more resources available to create cool content. String™ takes up a minuscule 120 kB at runtime and runs internally at 70 frames per second  - on an iPhone 3G, making it the fastest AR technology available on the iPhone right now. With newer iterations of the iPhone, the benefits are of course, exponential.

It’s this speed and small size that has allowed String Labs to produce Scrawl™, the world’s first 3D spatial drawing app for iPhone which blurs the boundaries between drawing, sculpting and 3D modeling. Although very much a tech demo at this point, String Labs is planning to release this onto the App Store sometime in the future.

“Skipping a desktop release and going straight for mobile was our primary strategy right from the start,” said Alan Maxwell, Founder & CEO of String Labs. “For the user, it’s all about context; connecting engaging, interactive content with their real world experience via their handhelds. String™ is perfectly positioned to deliver those user experiences on the current generation of mobile devices. Developers using it are about to deliver some amazing things - watch this space.”

Facts & Figures

  • Proprietary vision-based augmented reality tracking library, available for iPhone 3G, 3GS and 4.
  • Excluding video capture, tracking frame rate limited only by camera hardware but typically ~70FPS on a 3G,
  • Tracks up to 10 images simultaneously.
  • Typically uses ~120 kB of memory at runtime, excluding video capture.
  • Unity 3D support includes a previewer, allowing for rapid testing.
  • Developers can be up and running in minutes, not hours.
  • Android version - Q1 2011
